Kym McNabney Shares about Prison Ministries

One of the greatest things about becoming a blogger is the connections I’ve made with other authors/bloggers and the various ministries I’ve come across to serve our big and powerful God. This week I had the great fortune to e-meet Kym McNabney and find out about her involvement in prison ministries through Willow Creek Community Church. I bet she has some stories to tell. In fact, she does, and thirteen are shared in the book, Stories of Faith and Courage from Prison, by Connie Cameron and Jeff Peck.

Find out more …

clip_image001Stories of Faith and Courage from Prison, is an inspirational collection of true stories laid out in a daily format; one per day for 365 days. Each story will tell about a work of God in the lives of those who have experienced some aspect of prison. A single scripture verse will accompany each writing, pointing to the hope and truth found in God’s word.

While incarcerated, many inmates spiritually hit bottom and come face-to-face with the choices they have made. Thankfully, God uses Christian volunteers, prison chaplains, family members, outside friends, Christian pen pals, and other inmates, to share His love and truth with the lost behind bars. Regardless of how they are offered hope, inmate’s testimonies, along with their daily walk challenges, are moving and inspirational.

You will read amazing stories including Brandon, a prisoner who had a prayer warrior mother, and was also visited by a Christian volunteer. Brandon came to Christ while incarcerated, and witnessed constant gang activity behind bars, including preying upon the youth on the outside. Since his release, Brandon often risks his life in his ministry of intervening in the lives of youth who are at risk to become involved in gang activity.

The battle for the souls of inmates is fierce. One female prisoner said, “When I first arrived at prison in 2002, Christianity was openly practiced and Satanic practices were underground. Now it is just the opposite.” This inspirational book will remind Christians of their admonishment by Jesus to visit the imprisoned, to pray for them, and to share the gospel with them (Matthew 25:36). These collective, true stories will especially touch those who are uncomfortable with prison ministry, helping them to develop compassion for the shunned souls of society.

Quotes from inmate letters:

I was deeply moved by receiving the blessing of the gifts Willow sent. Being that I don’t have support from family and friends, I’ve come to understand my real family comes from God. God had showed me over the years that He’s the only one I need to depend on. Even though I didn’t hear from family and friends, I was relieved knowing that God always thinks of His people, by utilizing your church and staff to reach out to people such as myself. I want to thank you all personally for doing the work of our Father.

James, Pontiac CC

My purpose for writing you is to inform you that I have received the Christmas bag Willow sent to the prison, and wanted to say to all that worked on this touching idea, thank you, thank you, thank you.
To put all of your judgment about those in prison to the side, and sacrifice your time and money to send something that is helpful, was very heartwarming.

A.J., Pontiac CC

Thank you so much for the gifts Willow gave me on Christmas, and your thoughts and prayers. It is because of all of you that I have finally decided to accept Jesus Christ as my Lord and Savior.

Johnathon, Ogle County Jail

Thank you so very much for thinking of us in prison. You put a huge smile on our faces. That was very thoughtful and I’m very grateful. I feel like the Spiritual Survival book was meant for me.

Samantha, Logan CC

I wish to offer my words of gratitude. What you did was more than give us snacks and trinkets. You even did more than speak to our spirituality. You showed us that you cared about us, despite our faults. You brought us some semblance of a Christmas season. Receiving those packages and digging through them with wonder and anticipation gave us a chance to remember how Christmas use to be. Thank you from the bottom of my heart. To take up your time and money to do that for us, without even knowing who we are, this is not something that will be soon forgotten.

Brian, Pontiac CC

Thank you for the Christmas cards. I thought I was not going to be able to send a Christmas card to my mom, but thanks to you I was able to. This is my first Christmas away from my family and no one send me a card. I was mad until I got this from you. It made my day.

Rayvone, Vienna CC

When I returned to my housing unit on December 18th, I found a package on my desk that was donated by your congregation. This was the first time in 11 years that anyone has given me any type of gift for the Christmas holiday.

Ken, Pontiac CC

I am writing from Massachusetts to thank you for all that Willow dose with the prison ministry there in IL. I have a nephew that’s incarcerated in Cook County Jail. He asked for a Bible, and received one. He’s now exploring his faith.

Teresa G, aunt of an incarcerated nephew

Thank you all for thinking about us in here. So often society looks at us as expandable, incorrigible, evil, wicked, undesirable, etc. In fact most of us are not any of those things. We are guilty of our crimes 90% of the time, but our crimes are not the sum total of who we are. The gifts you send are Gods love in action.

Patrice, Pontiac CC

March of the Minions

Don’t you just love those little yellow guys?!

A few weeks ago I encouraged you to BE a Minion (for God). My point, in case you missed it, was that we don’t have to do BIG things for God for Him to make BIG things happen in us. This week, I wanted to give you examples of what this can look like, so I’m going to do one of those “best of” thingies where I go through past posts to find other Minions for the MIGHTY. These are people who put their faith in action in the everyday. Read the excerpts and see how you can be ready for when God calls you to do something similar. These are not stories about those who served. They are stories about the people who were impacted. See how God used the servers to fill other’s need of a Savior.

Excerpts from Greg Holt’s testimony—a man who was shown Christ when his life was in shambles. I love how he calls his new friends “those” people. Haven’t many of us been afraid of being one of “those?” See what they do for him …

Along the way in this part of the story God stepped in. My wife was a school bus driver, and picked up a special needs child. She became friends with this child’s parents. They were not my friends. I really did not want to have anything to do with them. To make a long story short…I became friends with this couple. This is when things got really interesting.

This couple, well they were some of “those” people; you know those Christian people. Now I began to really like these guys, even though they were Christians. They would talk about God without shoving it down my throat, always had Christian music on. There was just something different about them. They were so nice and always willing to help me out even with my son who was a handful.

Excerpts from Rachel Rutledge’s testimony. She wrote mostly about how the music of Third Day inspired her many times of her life, but what enamored me with her story was when she tells of how a member of the band reached out to her personally. See what I mean …

I was traveling home to Virginia after some girlfriends and I had sung at an event. I stopped at a gas station, when I ran into this band named Third Day! I can't be positive which group member I spoke to (we were all so young then). It was either Mark or David. He wore a 3D t-shirt - upon which I struck up a conversation. I said how I loved the name and that I too was in a group. He then took the next several minutes to witness to me right there in the middle of nowhere at 2am. Even though I was already a Christian, I listened and was so impressed by his heart and willingness to share with a stranger in that situation. It would have been so easy to say hi, thank you, and to move on. From that moment on, I fell in love with Third Day... and more-so with their heart and love for the Lord.

Little did that band member know, but he gave me much hope that night. See, just days before I had been hit several times by my husband while in the car driving to Virginia. I had been in an abusive marriage for 5 years at that point—desperately trying to work things out.

Excerpts From Chris Cowans’ testimony. A story about a man who was brought to Christ after an explosion almost took his life. There are many minions in this one.

First, one of his colleagues who’d endured the blast with him …

I need to give you some background on the man with the injured legs. His name is Todd Adams. He had been working with me for over four years. I knew he was a Christian. He and I had numerous discussions over the years about his God and his God’s Word. I had attended a First United Methodist church as a child, but I had not attended any church for over twenty years. I was interested in the discussions we had about Jesus Christ, but I did not see eye to eye with everything we discussed. He said he believed everything as it appeared in the Bible, in other words, there were no contradictions of scripture. I had read some of the Bible before. I found what appeared to me to be many contradictions in the scriptures. I could not follow this line of thinking. I believed in a God who was an all-loving, merciful God. I could confess my sins on my deathbed and all would be forgiven. After the explosion occurred, my eyes and ears were clip_image001opened to the truth.

Todd had managed to drag the injured man lying on the floor, Rick, closer to the open doorway. He then assisted Jeff who was still sitting on the floor. Jeff is about 6’ 5" tall and 250 pounds. Todd’s legs were just about to give out on him at this point. Todd called on the name of Jesus to give him the strength to help his injured co-worker. At this point, help had started to arrive.

Then, there is Chris’s teacher who had no idea how her lesson would one day come in handy …

I was not a man given over to a steady prayer life, but I felt that, if there was a God, maybe He could help my friends. I began to pray for my friends and co-workers to all be found alive and to thank God for sending all of the help he had provided
My fourth grade public elementary reading teacher taught my class the 23rd Psalm back in Decatur, Indiana, during the years 1969-1970. I do not think I understood the significance of the words to this beautiful Psalm during that time. I had not even thought of this Psalm for over 20 years. But while I was lying on the ice praying to God for my friends to be all right, this Psalm popped into my head just as clear and fresh as if I had been reading the words. I felt the Spirit of God descend upon me and immediately the Spirit gave me peace and comfort. I knew I would be all right, and that He was in control of the situation.

And here are people Chris had only met once. Don’t think your small acts go unused by the Almighty …

During this time I received many visits from friends and strangers. I had numerous visits from church friends of my injured co-worker. I knew some, but not all of these people. Their love, generosity, and compassion touched me. Two instances, which occurred in the hospital, stand out in my mind. The day I was released, a new nurse was sent in to my room to tend to my injuries. While she was cleaning my burns and applying fresh dressings, she asked me if I knew Jesus. This got my mind to thinking. Did I know Jesus? I had been told of Jesus as a child. I had been told Jesus loved me. But, did I really know Jesus? I couldn’t give her a good answer. I told her I knew of Jesus, but it had been a while since I had been to church or thought about him. She told me Jesus could help me in my road to recovery.  One day before I was released, a woman came into my room. She appeared to be in her mid-thirties and was dressed in a hospital gown. She was a patient at the hospital also. She said she had heard of the accident. She told me to put my faith in the Lord Jesus and he would take care of me. She left the room and I never saw her again. Her picture was in the obituary column the next day. She had died that night. I believe the paper stated she had died of cancer. My mind started to think about the direction my life had been taking and where I needed to be in my walk with God.

Powerful, huh?!!! Look at all those Minions!!!

While traveling through this “blast from the past” to pick out tidbits of minions to share with you, I found something amazing. In some of these testimonies there is no mention of another person at all—just an encounter with God. However, I suppose there were those who’d been there in some way, and others who prayed at various times of that person’s life. Either way, it is a reminder that WE are not the be-all and end-all of salvation—“I Am” is. He chooses to use us not because He needs us, but because He wants us in The Body, working together for His Glory.

Do you have minions who’ve meant a lot to you? Tell us about them.

What Brought You to Christ?

What Brought You to Christ?

I have been pondering this question a lot lately, both for myself and those around me.

Why?

Because I want to know what the draw is so I can explain it to those who know nothing about Him. But now I’m thinking there is no one right answer. For some it’s Grace, the idea we are forgiven for all our sins. That would make sense, but I don’t think it’s what first drew me.

You see, though I’ve been a sinner all my life—I know, shocker ;o)—and I did lots of things adults told me were wrong, so did everyone else … or so I reasoned. Yes, unfortunately, I think I believed in a “works theology,” but I thought I was doing pretty well, because there were lots of people around me doing much worse.

I worked very hard to maintain some standards in my life. Some for my vague notion of a moral authority (or God), but many to ensure I was successful as the world defines success. I liked being master of my own destiny, feeling I couldn’t go wrong, because I had control over what happened to me. This gave me a sense of power, but became increasingly wearying as the awesome responsibility attached to it grew.

When I first heard—vaguely—about this thing called Grace, it didn’t resonate as having a ton of value. I didn’t realize the depth of my sins, nor did I recognize the sacrifice made for my prescribed punishment—death. I guess I thought my “good” behavior was more about escaping punishment in this life.

What did it for me? What finally attracted me to this Savior guy and His Father?

I asked my sister the same question recently and she answered with the same word—Peace.

Why peace and what does it come from? The answer for me would have to be from order and security. You see, now that I can trust a wise God who knows all and believe that His framework is a good one, I don’t have to wonder what to do next. I do what He calls me to do, whether it be abstaining from sin or acting on an answer to prayer. I didn’t used to trust God completely. You might say I didn’t have faith. But once I saw other Christians following His precepts from the Bible and watched the fruits of that faith, I decided to try it myself. That’s when I discovered something amazing—He knows what He’s talking about, and the fact there is someone out there who truly knows—amongst the contradicting talking heads—gives me peace.

Which brings me to the next characteristic—security. Oh, how I used to worry about every little thing. When relying on myself to achieve, I also relied on myself to stay safe. But this is not a safe world, so for someone desiring absolute safety, I’d be tempted to cloister myself and never take risks. Not a good way to live. Then, I learned about the Sovereignty of God and I no longer need be ruled by my own control. I could leave it in God’s hands and know that whatever happens He has a purpose in it. Yes, bad things still occur, but I’ve been able to see how He’s used even these for good.

As I listen to sermon after sermon on Grace, or read about others putting down churches for focusing on the abstention of sin—calling them hate-mongers—I wonder why it is I sometimes feel a greater comfort (yes, I said comfort) with the latter. For me, I guess, it’s partially because that is the place God met me first—showing me a better way. It’s where I learned to trust Him. It was also the first time I was able to relax.

Think about Psalm 23:4 where it says, “your rod and your staff, they comfort me” (NIV). Why would a rod and staff bring comfort? They are big sticks! The word for rod, as translated, can be a tool for punishing, ruling (like a scepter) and walking. The word for staff means a walking stick used for support. The message here is that His authority and our trusting reliance on His wisdom gives us comfort. And it does for me. I no longer have to figure EVERYTHING out. I need only look to Him.

I like that!

So where does Grace come in? Given it is the one thing that sets Christianity apart from all other religions, it plays a huge roll. For some who’ve grown up in a works-based church it is the immediate draw. But for those whose lives were saturated in relative good and bad, it appears almost meaningless.

Finally, as I learned more about this God of the Bible and how smart this dude really was, I learned two things: 1) His ways are right; and 2) Knowing He’s right, I still don’t always follow Him. It began to dawn on me that He is really really good, and I am really really … not. He does not have to save me from my prescribed punishment and yet He sacrificed everything to do just that. The more I come to know Him and the more I seek to do His will, the more I feel the gap between who He is and what I am.

NOW, I appreciate Grace! Oh boy, do I appreciate Grace. I think this is what Paul meant when he wrote, “No one will be declared righteous in His sight by observing the law; rather through the law we become conscious of sin” (Romans 3:20, NIV). We cannot truly appreciate this wonderful gift until we understand, not just the law, but the wisdom of its author. It’s humbling to say the least. And yet God reaches down to us and calls us His.

So as we preach the Gospel, let us not only teach of God’s love, but of His wise counsel. Let us help others experience the totality of their Creator’s greatness: order, tempered by His unending love.

Please tell me in the comments below, what is it that first drew YOU to Christ? And if you have a longer testimony you’d like to share with me, email me from my contacts tab. I’d love to hear from you!

Do You Want to Hurt Yourself?

It’s been a crazy week and my mind swirled with too many things I could write about, but nothing seemed to fall into place. I had this calming thought that kept telling me God would reveal it Friday morning, so not to worry.

Then He did. On Friday morning.

I’ve wanted this website to be about helping people find wholeness in Christ. It should not be about me, it should be about Him. But when another website has the goods to tell the story, sometime you just need to point the way. That’s what I’m doing today.

I discovered this website a few weeks ago and I am enthralled. These ladies have a heart to help the hurting. They have recently started a series about “cutting,” a practice used by people who have shut off their emotions to the point they can only feel by hurting themselves. It’s more prevalent than you think. Some of the video testimonies on this site echoed the lives of many young women I knew growing up. These videos give hope and potential answers for those suffering with this and similar issues.

Check them out. If not for yourself, maybe for someone you know. Pray for these women and the many out there needing the same answers.

How God Got My Attention—By Chris Cowans

Update (December 2016):
This is a testimony I’d posted on January 11, 2013, shortly after I’d first e-met Chris Cowans on the Gomer (Third Day Psycho Fan) Facebook page. A lot has happened since then. Through the Gomers, he met and married another Gomer friend of mine whose testimony is also on this blog—Cathy Payton (Cowans).  I’ve had many opportunities to meet him myself and could tell you of his generosity to me and my fellow Gomer friends.
Over this past year, Cathy revealed to us all that Chris was battling brain cancer, and that he wasn’t expected to live. And though many of us hoped and prayed for miraculous healing, God decided to take him home only a few days ago. We are heartbroken!

So what did I do (besides sob into my computer keyboard)? I decided to go back to this testimony and find the yellow brick road through Chris’s life, to see how he made his way to the wondrous city of heaven. I found gems there.
Read below, through his bio, and discover “how God got his attention,” and also how he was called afterward. As I reread it, I was struck by how God used death to bring life (ie. His co-worker and the lady in the hospital). In spite of loss and grief, there was also hope and rejoicing. This life is not the end.

Given, the number of hits this testimony has received since Chris’s death, I suspect that God will use Chris’s passing to bring even more life.
The below is a frightening tale. But because of it, Chris will live with his Father God, who loves him deeply, for eternity! That’s a great story with a happy ending …

(Romans 5:1-5)

Chris Cowans - Wingnut Gomer

My name is Chris Cowans. On April 2, 1994, I was involved in an industrial accident in Kenai, Alaska, and my life was changed forever. Today, I am employed by the same oilfield service company in Texas as an instructor. In 1984 - 1998, I handled oilfield explosives as part of my normal daily business duties.  clip_image002I had been talking to one of my co-workers when an explosion occurred. I was thrown face down on the concrete floor. I remember hearing an enormous blast, seeing a flash, and feeling what seemed like a wind rush past me. I was dazed, but I did not ever lose consciousness. My first reaction was one of total disbelief. I knew there had been an explosion, but I could not comprehend how or why it had occurred.

I have always considered what I do in my job to be safer than driving to and from work every day. I maintain this same belief today.

After my mind realized an explosion had occurred, I thought I was dead, or soon would be. Five of us were within ten feet of the source. The sixth man in the building had just left the area. He was in the office portion of our building when it took place. All of the safety films I had ever watched concerning explosives gave me very little hope for any of us surviving the blast. The images of the video’s shattered mannequins raced through my mind.clip_image004

I heard one of my co-workers yelling for us to get out of the building. I lifted my head and looked to my right to see this man hopping on one leg. His coveralls were in shreds from the waist down and his legs appeared to have large chunks of flesh torn from them. I could see the blood running from his open wounds and I knew he was seriously hurt. This man looked straight at me and said, "Chris, we have to get out of here." I muttered, "Yes, I know." It was at this point, I first realized I was still alive.  I felt pain in my legs and back for the first time. We had a large overhead door open about 60 feet from us. The man with the injured legs started to hop towards it. I started crawling on my stomach using my elbows to pull me there. I was afraid to look at or attempt to use my legs. I did not know if I even had legs at this point. My co-worker and I made it outside.

After the explosion occurred, my eyes and ears were clip_image006opened to the truth.

Once outside the building I looked back into the shop and saw the hole in the wall caused by the explosion. It was 25 feet wide from the cement floor up to the roof line. The roof was also blown off the building in this same section continuing three-fourths of the way across. The explosion was a tremendous blast heard and felt up to ten miles away. Numerous large and small pieces of debris and shrapnel were thrown hundreds of feet. One large piece of metal, about three feet long, was thrown over a 70 foot tall stand of spruce trees that was 100 yards wide. It landed through the roof of a business next door. Another large piece of metal about seven feet long and weighing 250 lbs. was thrown into the ditch across the highway in front of another business about 300 yards away. Both of these pieces of metal were thrown hundreds of feet.

clip_image008I also noticed my coveralls were in shreds from the waist down, but both of my legs and feet were still there. A fire started in close proximity to the hole in the wall. This fire gutted the entire office area and a portion of the shop area. I could see two more of my co-workers inside. One man, Jeff, sat on the floor rocking back and forth. He brought his hands up to his head every few moments. Jeff was about 65 feet from us. Another man lay on the floor about 20 feet in front of Jeff. He didn’t move. I could not recognize this man at this point. I could not see our other co-worker anywhere.

Todd and I called for our co-workers to get out of the building. There were more explosives present and the fire could cause them to blow. The two men we could see in the shop appeared to be too injured to help themselves or could not hear us. I asked Todd if he could reach the telephone a few feet from where we were located to call 911. He hopped several yards back into the shop and quickly returned to say the phone was no longer on the wall. He then stated he was going back in the shop to get the other men out. I looked at his bleeding legs. I knew this would not be possible for him to accomplish in his current condition.  inside forceI watched him hop back into the shop while I got myself up to my feet and stumbled around the corner to where the phone should have been. The phone had indeed been blown off of the wall. I returned to the spot outside and lay back down on the ground. A man came running out of the woods behind our building. He said he lived in a trailer nearby and wanted to know what had happened. I told him to call 911 and the fire department. He immediately turned around and ran back into the woods. Dave, another co-worker who had been in the office during the moment of the explosion, came running around the back of the building. He said, "Oh, my Lord! What happened?" I told him that we had an explosion and four men were still inside the building. We needed to get them out immediately and evacuate the area. He ran into the shop with the man who had just returned from the woods.

Dave had flagged down some passing motorists to help us out. Dave and the man from the woods helped Rick and myself nearer to the road and further from the building. They helped Todd out to the road.  Two other men driving by the building helped carry Jeff out of the larger view of forcebuilding on a board. The fire department had arrived at this point. Two acquaintances of mine arrived on the scene. Both of these men had performed this same type of work with explosives, but they did not work for the company I am employed with. They just happened to be passing by at the time of the accident. I told them the names of all of the employees present. The acquaintances passed this information on to the emergency response personnel. One man was still unaccounted for. I also informed these two men of the dangers still present with the fire and explosives in the building. They passed this information on also, and the emergency personnel were pulled back after a sweep of the shop area and a brief attempt to fight the fire.

One of these acquaintances covered me with his coat while I lay on the snow covered ground and held my hand. I saw Todd having a tourniquet applied to one of his legs by a woman who had stopped. It turned out she was a nurse and drove my friend to the hospital at breakneck speed before the ambulances arrived. He called to me saying; "I don’t know what happened, Chris." I responded, "I don’t know either." Rick was now lying on the ice beside me. The man from the woods was talking to him and trying to comfort him. I could see Rick talking to the man and that he was bleeding from the face. I told him the ambulances would be here soon. I do not know if he heard me. I kept asking about the missing man and Jeff, whom I could not see from my position on the ice. I was not a man given over to a steady prayer life, but I felt that, if there was a God, maybe He could help my friends. I began to pray for my friends and co-workers to all be found alive and to thank God for sending all of the help he had provided.  Bible

My fourth grade public elementary reading teacher taught my class the 23rd Psalm back in Decatur, Indiana, during the years 1969-1970. I do not think I understood the significance of the words to this beautiful Psalm during that time. I had not even thought of this Psalm for over 20 years. I felt the Spirit of God descend upon me and immediately the Spirit gave me peace and comfort. I knew I would be all right, and that He was in control of the situation.

The ambulances soon arrived and we were all transported to the hospital in Soldotna, Alaska, about 15 miles away. Jeff and Rick were soon flown to Anchorage hospitals by emergency medical helicopters. Jeff had suffered two skull fractures, the loss of both eardrums, third degree burns on his neck, numerous cuts and bruises. He had a scoop of flesh removed from the back of his skull. Rick had lost the lens to one eye, severe burns to his wrists, second degree burns to his head, neck and face, damage to one eardrum, numerous cuts and bruises. He had a large portion of flesh removed from one thigh and had shrapnel in his leg.  Todd had two broken legs and numerous cuts and bruises. His eardrum was also damaged. One leg was severely broken in the knee area. He now has screws and wire holding the bones together. It is simply a miracle he was able to walk at all and rescue his fellow workers. Dave suffered damage to his hearing and smoke inhalation. He was treated at the hospital and released.  clip_image011

I received second degree burns to my neck, head, face and wrists. My right eardrum was perforated and the left eardrum was largely gone. I was cut and badly bruised from head to toe. Some shrapnel punctured my thigh. The doctor felt leaving the shrapnel in place would be the best treatment as he felt the shrapnel would never work itself out of the leg. Four weeks after the accident this shrapnel had moved to the surface of my thigh and was removed in a simple procedure. I discovered fifteen years after the accident that my L5 vertebrae had been broken at the time when a doctor showed it to me on an x-ray.

My friend and co-worker, Craig’s, body was found the next morning after the fire had burned itself out. It was determined that he was killed instantly. I was saddened by the news, but thankful he did not suffer.

I was kept in intensive care the first night in the hospital to monitor my oxygen level and see if I had inhaled any dangerous flames or fumes. I looked in the mirror the next morning and was shocked to see my reflection. My face was black and swollen from the burns. My eye brows, eye lashes, and most of my hair were gone. I had wood chips and other debris melted into the remainder of my hair. I knew who I was, but I certainly did not recognize the man looking back at me.

I was allowed to take a shower on the third day at the hospital. The water felt so wonderful I stayed in it for an hour and a half, savoring every moment. I never before realized how important and wonderful the little things in life are.

My wife was finally able to bring my two and a half-year-old daughter to visit me in the hospital on the fourth day. My daughter marched into the room, looked at my swollen face, covered with Silvadene cream, jumped up on the bed, and gave me a big hug. She didn’t see a burned face and injured body. She saw her Daddy and my heart leapt with joy.

My co-worker with the broken legs and I were released after five days in the hospital.

Two days after I was released from the hospital, I was home alone taking one of my wonderful showers. My wife had dance rehearsal for a jazz performance and my daughter was at the baby sitters, as I could not yet move very fast to take care of an energetic two-year-old. Jeff and Rick remained in the Anchorage hospitals in serious condition. They were both scheduled to have major surgeries the next morning. Funeral services were to be held for Craig the next day also. I started to pray in the shower with everything I knew and felt to do for God to watch over my friends and their families while having their surgeries. I also prayed for God to give Craig’s family comfort in their time of grief and sorrow.  clip_image012I don’t know how long I was standing there in the shower praying. I suddenly felt enormous warmth passing through my body from head to toe. I was tingling all over my body. I do not really know how to describe this feeling other than wave after wave of pure love. I felt an overwhelming joy and peace fill me completely up. I knew I was in the presence of God. God started to speak to me. He said, "I want you to tell people to love one another. I have given you a gift in your knowledge of computers. I want you to use that gift in telling people your story and about me." I couldn’t believe God was talking to me. I was crying for joy. I told him I would do as he asked. I got out of the shower and was drying off with a towel. I felt as if I was walking ten feet off of the ground. I did not understand how, why or what had happened to me. I knew I was a changed person from this point on in my life. I felt different than I had ever felt in my life. It was a wonderful, indescribable feeling of peace and joy. I knew God was in control of my life. I was so happy and ready to face the world.

As I was toweling off, the phone rang. I answered the phone and a man’s voice on the other end of the line asked if Chris was home. I told him I was Chris. He told me he was Craig’s father, John. I had never met this man before. John proceeded to tell me that neither he nor anyone in his family had any feelings of animosity towards me or any of the other men working the day of the accident. He said his son had spoken very highly of all of us and about how happy he had been with his job. He liked getting up in the morning for work. Craig had recently gotten his own apartment that he shared with his wife and eighteen-month-old son. John stated how happy his son had been with everything coming together in his life. I was so happy to hear the words this man spoke. I was very choked up, but I finally managed to get out a few words. I told John he had so much to be proud of in his son. It had been a real pleasure to have known and worked with his son. I hung up the phone shaking my head. I could not believe this was happening.

The next day, my wife and I attended the funeral of my young friend. There were over 400 people at the funeral service—standing room only. The funeral service was the most touching I had ever witnessed. It was a celebration of life, not a sorrowful event. I met Craig’s father at the service. John got up before the crowd of people and said many of the same things he had told me the night before. He shared how God had touched him on a plane flying back from his job in Prudhoe Bay, Alaska. God had told him not to worry or to grieve, for his son was with him. I pray this is the case. Craig’s young wife read some of their favorite poems. God had given both of them the words and the strength to touch all of those present at the service. I felt God was clip_image013reaching for me, and I knew I must learn more about him.

I accepted an invitation from my friend, Rahn , to come to a service at his church. Rahn had a similar position as mine in a different department for the same employer. He attended the same church as Todd. Immediately, upon walking through the doors of the church I could feel I was in the right place. I felt as if I was returning home after a long period of being gone. I was very comfortable there. The song service before the teaching was very uplifting and joyous. Everyone clapped and raised their hands in praise to God. I had never been in a church where anyone raised their hands to God, gave personal testimonies, prayed out loud (except for the preacher) or spoke in tongues. It was remarkably refreshing to observe people truly praising and worshipping God with all their might.

I accepted an invitation to attend a church service with another co-worker at a different church. The service was nice, but it lacked the Spirit present at the first church. I decided to start attending services at the first church. This is the Apostolic Assembly of Jesus Christ in Soldotna, Alaska. Our pastors are Alice and Buck Martin.

I have learned more about Jesus since my rebirth. I realize there is so much more to learn. Each day brings new opportunities to grow in God according to His perfect will. God's Holy Spirit makes it possible for us to understand His Word (by having the mind of God). The Word comes alive and teaches life's lessons for every situation. Thank you Jesus, for your wisdom and mercy.

EPILOGUE

A short time after I began attending the Apostolic Assembly of Jesus Christ, God opened a door to help a brother, Tom Raddatz, with a Bible study project. Tom had written a Bible study about six years prior to the accident that was entitled “The Commandments of God and the Traditions of Men.” He had not yet published the works, as God had not yet made the way. God has given Tom a gift to write. Tom felt it was time to put the Bible study and his other writings, on the CB052645Internet. I was asked to assist him in this endeavor. I am by no means a computer expert. I enjoy working with computers very much. God has made it easy for me to learn, work, and understand software and computer hardware. I bought some books on HTML coding to increase my knowledge of creating web pages. I put together the web pages and put them on-line for Tom. I spent several years assisting Tom with editing, spell checking, and posting other letters and studies that he had written until he moved from Alaska to Ohio.

I left Alaska in 2007 after my father had passed away from a 3 ½ year fight with cancer. My mom began having health problems from the stress in dealing with his illness. I decided to move closer to my family in order to visit and help more frequently than I could from Alaska. My mom’s health has improved from what it was then and I was offered an instructor’s position with my employer in the Dallas area.  I moved to Dallas in 2008 and began teaching our employees about explosive safety, oilfield math, and oilfield hydraulics calculations. I get to travel to different places around the world and the U.S. as part of my job. I have been to Cairo multiple times, Indonesia, Malaysia, and Scotland. I begin the classes I teach with a PowerPoint presentation with photos taken in the days after the accident. I am able to share with people from all over the world, the miracles that God performed on that day and the days following. This has opened the door on numerous occasions for deeper discussions about Jesus and His Word.

Today, there are almost no visible signs of the injuries I sustained in this accident. My hearing is pretty good and is considered normal within conversational tones and frequencies. I believe this to be a miracle considering the abuse my ears sustained. There are virtually no signs of any burns on my face or wrists. My body is healed, and best of all God is healing and preparing my soul for an eternal life with Him.

I began listening to Third Day shortly after the explosion occurred. I became a huge fan of their music which I find to be uplifting, full of God's Love and His Amazing Grace. I did not get the opportunity to see Third Day live until I moved to Texas in 2008. Now, I try to see them anytime they are close to the Dallas/Ft. Worth area and I am not traveling on business.

I thank our Lord Jesus for the love and mercy He has shown me. I also thank Him for the opportunities He gives to me to help spread His Word.

Thank you, Jesus!

I Need a Miracle

Check out this great video about the inspiration to one of Third Day’s newest releases:

This is why I write!!!

No, I don’t imagine someone driving in the woods and pulling out my fiction novel for one last read before they end it all, only to be saved by my words. But I have already been blessed to have heard how something I had on my blog—that I didn’t even write—was used by Him to better someone’s life. Nothing more empowering than knowing you’ve been used as an empty vessel … even though the power was all His, through the writing of someone else.

I don’t know if my work will ever touch even a fraction of the lives Third Day’s has, but none of that matters, because even one life can have far-rippling impact. See the story of the one man who reached one man, whose ministry today spans continents and whose church serves families with special needs like no other.

You, too, can have this impact! So don’t delay. Don’t worry about largeness of ministry or numbers of people, but healing of hearts and filling of souls. Who knows, you may be the subject of a story like this one: “I was really down one day, feeling there was no meaning in the world until this person approached me and …”

You fill in the rest—with your life!!!

The following is a list of posts from the Gomer Testimonies, a series about Third Day fans (aka. Gomers) whose faith was impacted by the music of Third Day. It really happens!

Best-Selling Author, Brandilyn Collins Tells How She Was Healed from Lyme’s Disease

If you are a reader of fiction, you probably know Brandilyn Collins as a bible and crossbestselling author. If you’ve ever been to an ACFW Conference, you know her as a wonderful Master of Ceremonies. But I’ve discovered, this year, her greatest gift—that as Prayer Warrior. Though many have seen—and felt—this gift in action around the “prayer room” at the conference, this story is not about her own wielding of His Sword, but largely of how she was the recipient of God’s Mercy through the prayers of others. Take time to absorb this one. God is very, very Big!!!

Here it is …

I have battled Lyme disease twice. The second time came with a reinfection in 2009. At that time I caught the disease fairly early and wasn’t nearly as sick as I was the first time. With the help of a Lyme-literate doctor, and after about six months of aggressive antibiotic treatment, I became well. To this day I remain completely healthy. I am a testament to the fact that long-term antibiotics can be effective in the treatment of Lyme.

My first battle began in 2002 and ended with a very different kind of healing—a miraculous one. I report that story here. You may read it and say, "Praise God." You may not believe the story at all, or even find yourself hostile to it. I cannot control your response. I can only say—this is what happened. In the New Testament, in the book of John, chapter 9, is a recounting of a blind man healed by Jesus. The religious leaders of the day grilled the man—why did this happen to you, how did it happen? The man couldn't answer all their questions. Finally he said (verse 25), "One thing I do know. I was blind but now I see!" In the same way I can't answer all the questions that arise from this story. I can only say, "I was crippled but now I walk."

By May of 2003 I'd battled Lyme disease and two of its coinfections for nearly a year. I was very sick. I'd gone from being a fit, five-miles-a-day runner to crippling around with a cane, unable to stand for more than a few minutes at a time. I'd lost my ability to write, and then, even to read. My entire body hurt. I had the horrific brain fog so common in Lyme. My eyes were sensitive to light. The bottoms of my feet felt like they were on fire, and I was constantly exhausted. Most of this time I was home-bound. I'd been diagnosed in late January of 2003 and had begun antibiotic treatment in February. By May, after three months of aggressive treatment administered by an experienced Lyme-literate doctor, I was worse. I learned this was not uncommon with Lyme patients as they begin their treatment, because the Lyme bacteria give off toxins as they're killed by the antibiotics, causing "Herx" periods of worsened symptoms. With Lyme, things truly can get worse before they get better.

The last week of the illness was a relatively good one for me, which was expected. I'd cycled off part of the medication for a week, allowing my body to rest. On Monday May 12th I was scheduled to start another round of medication, the harshest yet, and one expected to cause the worst "Herx" periods of all. Taking advantage of my better week, my husband, Mark, and I decided to go to our second home for the weekend. Then on Tuesday 6th God impressed upon me that we should visit the Healing Rooms in Spokane, Washington. I'd never gone there before. This is a Christian ministry with a plethora of miracles in its history.(Please see the Web site at www.healingrooms.com. There are various Healing Rooms across the country.)

Meanwhile, a friend from the American Christian Fiction Writers (ACFW) e-mail loop felt a strong impression to set up a 24-hour prayer time for me on Saturday May 10. She began signing up people to pray for 15-minute slots, starting at midnight FridayHis Hands night, Central time. No one on the loop knew I was planning to go to the Healing Rooms that very day. But God knew. And He'd now made it clear—Saturday was His day for me.

At that time I couldn't read much and couldn't sit at the computer to view emails. But through phone calls I began hearing from others in ACFW how the list for praying was filling up. I cannot adequately express how that made me feel. It's very humbling to see others choose to serve you, when you've done nothing to deserve such service. Yet there it was. And to see that people were even willing to get up in the middle of the night! I thanked God, knowing my unworthiness, yet also knowing that He was planning something big—for the good of us all.

Saturday morning I was really hurting, paying for trying to do too much on Friday. I hobbled into the Healing Rooms using my cane as much as I could, but with a weak upper body, you can't lean much on a cane. My son, daughter and husband went with me. The four of us met with two different prayer counselors in two subsequent sessions and prayed for my healing. I was expecting a miracle—but nothing happened. I was deeply disappointed. Why had God led me up to this, and then—nothing? But one thing I had learned during my illness was to praise God whether I felt like it or not. (Many times I didn't.) So in those deeply disappointing moments as we returned to our car, I willed myself to praise God simply for who he is—regardless of the fact that he'd "let me down."

On the way back home we stopped at a restaurant for lunch. When I got out of our SUV, I jumped right out of it. Getting out of that high-sitting vehicle had been a major issue for me. As I walked into the restaurant I suddenly didn't need my cane. At all. I walked slowly, but NORMALLY. I hadn't walked like that for months! Leaving the restaurant after lunch, I walked even better. By the time we got back to our house, I felt like a new person. The pain was gone. My knees were stronger. My elbows and neck didn't hurt. I felt ENERGY again. I went upstairs—taking those steps completely normally. Then I came down them (really hard for weak legs), again like the strong, fit person I used to be. For months I'd had to turn sideways and come down one step at a time, lowering only by using my left leg, because my right knee had been the worst. Now I just sailed down those stairs. I let out a whoop and called the family to come see. So of course I had to run back up the stairs—and sail down them again.

We all were beyond amazed.

Next I just had to strap on my jogging shoes. Hadn't had them on for a long time. I went outside to walk around our driveway. The driveways altogether around the house and garages and up to the road and back form about a 1/3 mile loop. And there are some grades to them. I hadn't been able to go up and down the merest grade, even with a cane, for a long time. Suddenly I was just walking up those hills. Then walking down. I ended up doing 3 laps, about 1 mile. The last lap I actually did a light jog.

I was healed! Completely, unbelievably healed.

I wanted to keep walking after the five laps, but I knew I should take it easy on my muscles, which weren't used to the exercise. So I went inside and turned on my computer to read emails. (Yes, I could now read!) What an outpouring from folks at ACFW who were praying! praying handsThey still didn't know I'd gone to the Healing Rooms. Yet post after post came through about the powerful prayer times people were having. They were being blessed, and God was giving many an expectation of a miracle. I realized then that this day of prayer, indeed, was not about me. It was about God releasing His power—in my body, and in the minds of all of those who were praying. Some of them even mentioned telling others—spouses or friends—about the prayers, and how those people had been affected. One of the women stopped the work in a beauty parlor, as she was getting her hair colored when her time came to pray. Her hair dresser and the receptionist prayed too, and the receptionist said, "I've never felt closer to God than right now." Others mentioned their spouses' amazement at the day of prayer--and how it was a witness for them.

By this time it was about 4:00 Pacific time. People would still be praying for me until 10 p.m. my time (midnight Central time). I knew without a doubt that I could not write the ACFW loop and tell them what had happened yet. God was continuing to pour out his blessings on those who were praying, and I needed to allow that to continue. The following day, after the 24-hour vigil had ended, I would tell them my incredible news.

Here are a few more of the many statements from those praying as they wrote the loop on Saturday:

"I could see Christ's light of healing and love going right through Brandilyn's life."

"No words would come except for Brandilyn's name. The more I tried to concentrate, the more her name kept being repeated. So I spent the whole time just saying her name, figuring the Holy Spirit knew what He wanted to say."

"This prayer list was called forth by God Himself. He will be lifted up and praises from the results of this day will be spoken throughout the world for some time to come."

"I really felt the presence of God."

"By the time I finished praying and crawled back into bed at 3:05 a.m., I knew that God had already begun to answer."

"I felt the strong desire to pray that God would heal Brandilyn right then."

"I was amazed at how blessed I was MYSELF during my half hour of prayer."

"God impressed me with the need to pray for healing right now. That prayer stream went throughout the day."

"When I closed my eyes to pray, I felt like I was already at the throne room of grace."

"It was a time of indescribable peaceful communion."

And the last one to pray, from 11:45 p.m. to midnight:

"The song 'Praise Him, praise Him, all ye little children' kept running through my head and interrupting my prayers, so I finally decided to just sing the song and changed my prayer of supplication to a prayer of praise for what I knew God had accomplished that day through the faithfulness of His children."

God had done an amazing thing. He'd used a need in my life as a springboard for pouring out His blessings on many.

When I finally went to bed that night, for the first time in months I didn't need to put a long pillow lengthwise under my legs. I'd had to do this because I couldn't straighten my knees, and because I needed my heels to hang off the pillow so they wouldn't rest on the bed, which hurt. But no longer did I need that pillow.

Mark and I got up the next day—Mother's Day—and went for a three-mile walk. Three miles! I'd counted it wondrous when I could shuffle a lap around the downstairs of our home. Then I came home from the walk and cleaned the kitchen. Did some vacuuming. Vacuuming!

From that day on (until a reinfection in 2009) I remained completely well. I immediately started writing again, and running. Before long I'd worked back up to my regular five miles. To this day I praise God for what he chose to do for me.

God’s Promise of a New Heart

Hold on to your hats for this story. It is amazing! And another one gleaned from a Third Day Fan friend, Robin Martin.

Robin is currently spending lots of time in the hospital with her dad, who she expects will soon be with the Lord due to congestive heart failure. Though she will sorely miss her father when God decides to take him home, she is grateful for the additional seven years she was given with him. The following is the story of how God gave her those years, and though it has elements which are bitter-sweet, they are a reminder that God, in His infinite wisdom, has His palm over our lives, and He will not allow us to slip from His Awesome Love.

Here is what she posted, along with the picture that tells it all:

To my friends of Third Day Fan Club:
7 years ago, on Thanksgiving Day, my father was in desperate need of a heart. As always in saying our blessing before our meal, we asked that God send us a message that dad would get a heart. After dinner, my now-deceased sister, was slicing the remainder of the ham and to everyone's surprise this is what she sliced into. Seeclip_image002 the picture. No other slice before it ... This slice and the next slice directly behind it had the same heart in the grain of the ham. ONLY TWO SLICES. We rejoiced and thanked God for the sign. Yes dad got his heart transplant, 5 weeks later. My sister was killed in a motorcycle accident. Our pastor said yes it was definitely a sign from God that Robert was going to GET a heart but also that Monique was going to GIVE her heart! How awesome!
My prayer for my father now... 7 years and God is paving his path to return home. Hard? Yes! Our family was blessed to have 7 extra years with our dad! Please keep him in prayer today as he will keep up his fight until his end. God bless you all as I CRY OUT TO JESUS!

Robin’s dad will be 73 in a few days—October 29th. He had his first major heart attack at 38, three more after that, three open heart surgeries, two strokes, survived colon cancer, skin cancer and a heart transplant. I’d call him a survivor!!! Evidently, God had a plan for those now, almost 73, years. We shouldn’t take any of this for granted!

God has our story written as well. It starts with His loving design of who we are, moves through the sacrifice of His only Son and ends in His Loving Embrace. I rest in this knowledge.

Peace!

MaryLu Tyndall’s Testimony of Faith

We are so blessed to have MaryLu Tyndall on LBOC today. I asked her to share her testimony of faith here, in conjunction with an interview about her latest release, Veil of Pearls, on InfiniteCharacters.com. I hope you enjoy.

MaryLu’s Testimony

I grew up in a home that was broken in more than one place. My broken homemother married multiple times, and I never knew my father. In addition, we moved twenty-five times before I turned eighteen. So, you can imagine what that type of upbringing can do to a shy, insecure little girl. I craved love and stability. I wanted someone to take care of me and never leave me. I had two choices to fill that need. One, to turn to the God I learned about in brief periods of Sunday School, or two, to seek to fill that need on my own with the things I saw in the world. I made the wrong choice.

Everything I did, every party, every relationship, every material possession I bought, every success I achieved, ultimately left me alone and empty. At age thirty-five, my second marriage was failing, I hated my dead-end job, my youthful beauty was fading, and my teenage kids were rebelling (wonder who they learned that from?) I remember wanting to kill myself, get it over with. I felt no hope for the future. I was a drinker back then. Alcohol helped numb the pain, and whenever life overwhelmed me, I’d sneak in my closet where I had a Biblehidden bottle of Tequila, and have a drink or two. One dark day, while sitting there drinking, I glanced up and saw my old Bible sitting on a shelf. I dusted it off and began to read, promising myself that I would read it from cover to cover to see if anything happened. What did I have to lose? I wanted to believe so badly that God was real and that He loved me, but I had grown very skeptical over the years.

I read it every night before I went to bed. Somewhere in the middle of Ezekiel, something began to happen. Passages prophesying how Israel would be scattered all over the world and then in the last days would return to their own land, flew out at me from the pages. You see, Israel was in the news a lot back then. Suicide bombings and rumors of war were a common story each night. And I knew enoughisrael dome history to know that Israel had only become a nation a few years before I was born. The stunning revelation that God had predicted that the Jews would return to their land sped through me like a cyclone. I remember saying out loud. “You’re real.” And then God’s presence fell upon me. I can’t quite describe it except to say it felt more real than anything I’d ever felt, hopeful, almost like a light went on inside of me. I got on my knees and began to sob. There in my bedroom, beside my bed, all alone, I gave my life to Jesus. I knew God was with me now. I knew He loved me and had a plan for my life. Suddenly my life had meaning and my heart was full. This is what I had been searching for!

But life didn’t get instantly better. In fact, it got worse! I had married an atheist and all of our children were atheists. I was in a house full of atheists! I didn’t know what to do. I didn’t know where to find a church, so I simply didn’t go. I had no Christian friends. My husband was not receptive to my newfound faith and asked me not to talk about it. So, you can imagine the struggles and heartaches I endured, in addition to the constant battles of faith. Yet, through it all, God never left me.

Now fifteen years later, I am happy to report that my husband is saved and all of our children but two have made solid commitments to the Lord and have been baptized. My marriage is better than I could have ever imagined, and though we still have struggles with wandering kids and jobs and family and life in general, one thing I willingly shout from the rooftops: God is real. He loves you more than you could ever imagine. And He is faithful!

Next week I’ll be posting a music devotional inspired by MaryLu’s favorite Hymn, Amazing Grace.

How God Breathed Creative Inspiration in My Writing—by Jennifer Hudson Taylor

tyndallpubshotA Christy Award finalist, MaryLu Tyndall dreamt of tall ships and swashbuckling pirates during her childhood years on Florida’s Atlantic Coast. She holds a degree in Math and worked as a software engineer for fifteen years before testing the waters as a writer. Now, while writing her eleventh novel, she manages a home, husband, and six kids while battling three cats who have decided that her keyboard is the best place to sleep! She believes that without popcorn and chocolate, life would not be worth living, and her sole motivation in life is to bring others closer to God.

The following is a blurb about her latest release which promises to be a very good read. See an interview of MaryLu on my other blog, InfiniteCharacters.com.
